According to a recent poll, only 53% of Americans say they really like their beds. Three out of four say their beds could be more comfortable!
If you’re part of the majority, then an adjustable bed might just give you the edge you need to enjoy truly satisfactory shuteye. That just begs the question:
What Is an Adjustable Bed?
An adjustable bed consists of two sections: the base, and the sleeping surface. The base is stationary, and exists solely to support the sleeping surface. The sleeping surface is connected to the base via a series of motorized joints, which are controlled individually via remote.
An adjustable bed allows the sleeper to customize the exact position of their sleeping surface. They may sleep with their legs elevated, which can help to reduce swelling, improve blood circulation, and relieve symptoms of medical conditions such as deep vein thrombosis. They may sleep with their head elevated, which can help relieve acid reflux, shortness of breath, sleep apnea, and symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. They may also sleep with their legs and head elevated and enjoy all the benefits of both.
How Do You Choose an Adjustable Bed?
Choosing the perfect adjustable bed is easy! Just make certain whichever model you purchase includes all of the features you need in order to enjoy a deep, comfortable sleep.
- Adjustability options. Not all adjustable beds offer the same level of customization. Some only offer head adjustability; some only offer feet adjustability; some offer both. Note that many adjustable beds have customizable height as well. They don’t offer health benefits, but they can make getting in and out of bed easier for people with limited mobility.
- Preset options. Having total control over your adjustable bed’s position is nice – but what if you want the bed to assume an ideal position for your sleeping preferences and health needs as easily as pressing a button? In that case, you want an adjustable bed with preset options, such as “zero-gravity” which minimizes the amount of stress that is placed on your supine body, or “anti-snore” which is specifically designed to – you guessed it – prevent snoring. Adjustable beds are also available with customizable presets, which allows you to cycle through your own custom preferred positions.
- Split options. Do you sleep with a partner who vocally dislikes your preferred sleeping position? Then there’s no need for either of you to compromise. If you invest in a split adjustable bed, then you will each have control over your own half. Split adjustable beds are typically available in queen, king and California king
- Power options. Most adjustable beds are fully electric: plug one in, and let the magic of alternating current take care of the rest. You may also choose a semi-electric bed, which raises and lowers itself with the turn of a manual crank. If you would prefer the most affordable option, then you may choose a motorless, manual-only adjustable bed.
- Additional options. Adjustable beds are available with several other options that can improve your quality of life. Wireless, backlit remote. Built-in outlets. Under-bed lighting. Massage functionality. Additional lumbar support. These are only a few of the comfort-enhancing features you can enjoy if you take the time to research your options before committing to your next bed!
